We had 20 participants selected from or near Berlin (due to the pandemic)

After the success of the first year, we were really excited for 2020, unfortunately the pandemic wreaked havoc on our plans. Never ones to give up amidst challenges, we forged on and created an online event basically overnight, where we converted the masterclasses and workshops into an online setting, and turned our group sessions into virtual writing sessions.

Our masterclasses were streamed live from Redbull Studios on YouTube and you can still check them out over at our channel. We had a keynote from our founder Jane Arnison, an awesome vocal workshop from Virginia and a Live Mixing presentation again from Jane. We also had workshops on Modular Synthesis by Jane, Sound Design and Sampling by Rroxymore and Arrangement by Steffi.

During this period our participants were put into collaborative groups and worked together to realise a song demo and from there also began developing the production. It wasn’t ideal as we wanted this to happen in the studio, but our participants were really gracious and got into the online program and made it work regardless.

We waited, and waited. . . and finally in May of 2021 we were able to get into a commercial studio, this time we were at newly opened The Brewery. in Berlin. It was such a treat to be back in the studio and to meet the participants in person finally! We had one educational studio day and then got straight into it with the participants completely running the studio themselves - Jane was in the background for support, but it was not really needed as the calibre of engineers on the program was very high.

Of the group of amazing music created we are very proud to say that one of the tracks created during Pathwaves 2020 has been commercially released (check it out below)

November 7 - 9th at Redbull Studios Berlin.

Our mentors were Steffie Doms, Isabel Gracefield and our Pathwaves founder Jane Arnison.

We had 14 lucky participants from all over the world including Sweden, India & Russia as well as a special focus on Australian participants due to our large funding partner the Australia Council and APRA Amcos.

As this was our first event we really didn’t know what to expect. We had a small amount of time to do it and as such it was a fast and massive effort to pull off. We were overwhelmed with the response having over 100 applicants with the portal for submissions only online for 10 days.

Over the 3 days we looked at everything that goes into making a song ready for release. Day 1 was recording, day 2 production & arrangement and day 3 focussed on mixing and finalising. Our participants had the opportunity to focus on studio recording, working with analog synths and getting comfortable with large format consoles. We had masterclasses from our mentors on recording session preparation, deep dive into arrangement and a mixing workshop.

We had our fantastic content team capturing the event and our participants and mentors at work, to support part of the pathwaves mission which seeks greater visibility for female and non-binary technicians.

The 3 day event was fierce. The vibe was strong and we made some serious music and had a great time.
